Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has pledged to crack down on unauthorized betting activities surrounding Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches, emphasizing that no betting companies have been officially licensed to offer odds on these games.
Concerns over the exposure of GPL matches on betting platforms have intensified, especially in the wake of match-fixing scandals like the AshantiGold versus Inter Allies controversy during the 2020/21 season.
Speaking at the GFA’s 30th Ordinary Congress, Okraku outlined the association’s strategy to combat these issues, stating that the GFA’s legal team will directly engage with betting companies to put an end to these practices.
“We have not licensed any betting company to take odds on our games. We are going to empower our legal department to confront this issue head-on. It is not okay for betting companies to feed on our football,” Okraku asserted. “It is time to say no to such companies. We are open to doing it the legal way. We will invite companies who want to partner with us to speak to us.”
As the new Ghana Premier League season kicks off on September 6, the GFA’s firm stance aims to restore integrity and trust in the league.
