Ghana have recorded a significant rise in the latest FIFA World Rankings, climbing eight places to 65th in the world following their winning start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars moved up from 73rd position after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match, a result that has boosted both their World Cup campaign and their standing in the global rankings.
Ghana’s impressive rise reflects the importance of results at major international tournaments, with World Cup matches carrying substantial ranking points. The victory over Panama earned the Black Stars an additional 33.83 points, increasing their overall tally to 1,380.71 points.
The win also marked a positive step in Ghana’s rebuilding process under head coach Carlos Queiroz, with a new generation of players making their mark on the global stage. Coventry City forward Brandon Thomas-Asante played a key role in the victory, providing the assist for midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, who scored the decisive stoppage-time winner in Toronto.
Yirenkyi’s goal not only secured all three points for Ghana but also saw the youngster become the Black Stars’ youngest-ever goalscorer at a FIFA World Cup.
The latest rankings underline Ghana’s progress as they seek to re-establish themselves among the continent’s leading football nations. The four-time African champions boast a proud World Cup pedigree, highlighted by their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Having made a strong start to their Group L campaign, the Black Stars will now focus on maintaining their momentum in the remaining group matches.
Ghana’s next challenge comes against England on June 23, before they conclude their group-stage campaign against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
With confidence high following their victory over Panama and a notable rise in the FIFA rankings, the Black Stars will be aiming to continue their upward trajectory both on the pitch and in the global standings.
