Ghanaian defender Maxwell Woledzi scored his first Major League Soccer goal to fire Nashville SC to a vital 2-1 victory over New York City FC, helping his side maintain their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup break.
The centre-back delivered the decisive moment early in the second half at GEODIS Park, rising highest to power home a header and send the home supporters into celebration.
Nashville had taken an early lead through Jeison Palacios, but New York City FC responded quickly when Nicolás Fernández converted from the penalty spot to level the score.
Woledzi, a graduate of the Right to Dream Academy, produced an outstanding overall performance and was later named Man of the Match for his commanding display at the back and his match-winning contribution.
Since joining Nashville from Norwegian side Fredrikstad in February, the 24-year-old has become an important figure in the squad, making 13 league appearances in the current MLS campaign.
The win strengthens Nashville’s position at the top of the Eastern Conference, extending their lead to five points over second-placed Inter Miami as the league pauses for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
