Mohammed Salisu was absent from Ghana’s recent international matches due to “injuries at his club”, according to Black Stars boss Chris Hughton.
However, since returning to Southampton, Salisu has not been involved in the team’s defeats to West Ham and Manchester City. The Athletic has now reported that Salisu’s continued absence is due to concerns about his attitude.
Salisu has started 21 times in the league this season, but his opportunities have decreased since Selles took over from Nathan Jones. Selles has shown a preference for Jan Bednarek and Armel Bella-Kotchap at the heart of his defence, and as a result, Salisu has only played once under the new boss and has not started a game. This follows a run of 14 consecutive starts.
Salisu reportedly desires to halt any contract negotiations until the end of the season, and with just over a year left on his contract, his time at St Mary’s may be coming to an end.
It remains to be seen what role he will play in the remainder of Southampton’s season, as they have eight games left to secure their Premier League status, starting with a match against Crystal Palace this weekend.
