The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, Ghana’s senior women’s national football team.
Björkegren, a highly experienced coach with nearly two decades in the profession, succeeds Nora Häuptle, whose contract with the GFA ended in December 2024. His appointment was confirmed in an official statement released by the GFA on Tuesday, January 14.
“Swedish Football Coach, Kim Lars Björkegren, has been appointed new Head Coach of the Senior National Female team, the Black Queens. He replaces erstwhile Coach, Nora Häuptle, whose contract with the GFA expired at the end of December 2024,” the statement read.
Björkegren began his football journey as a player, featuring for his hometown club in Ljungsbro, Sweden, and the top-tier Swedish side Åtvidabergs FF. However, his playing career was cut short at the age of 22 due to injury, leading him to transition into coaching—a move that has shaped his career ever since.
Armed with a UEFA License A coaching qualification, Björkegren has built an impressive coaching résumé over 18 years. His accomplishments include leading Apollon Ladies to a league title in Cyprus and winning the Damallsvenskan championship with Linköpings FC in Sweden. His exceptional performance in the 2020-2021 season earned him the Coach of the Season award in Cyprus.
Björkegren now takes over the Black Queens with the responsibility of building on the strong foundation laid by Nora Häuptle and steering the team to greater success.
