In a scathing assessment of the current state of Ghanaian football, former Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) boss, JY Appiah, has described the sport as “in tatters”.
In an interview with Peace FM, monitored by Footballghana.com, Appiah highlighted several alarming issues that have compromised the integrity of the sport in the country.
Appiah pointed to several instances of rule-breaking, including Real Tamale United’s use of unregistered players in a league match, which he believes has gone unpunished.
He also raised concerns about alleged match-fixing incidents on the final day of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season, citing the predictability of certain events, such as the awarding of penalties, as a worrying trend.
Appiah expressed frustration with the lack of accountability in Ghanaian football, saying that many individuals who speak out against wrongdoing are met with silence or even punishment. He lamented that some people have become so desensitized to corruption that they have “folded their arms and watched” as the sport deteriorates.
“The football is in tatters,” Appiah said. “When we started doing football, some of them weren’t born so I don’t want my grandson to insult me so those that when they see something wrong and will say it have all folded their arms and watch. Ghana were we are playing football commentators can predict when a penalty will come and a penalty will come. RTU used unregistered players to play football nobody is talking when you ask those in there they will say when you speak you are out your team will go to relegation. Ghana football is in tatters.”
