Heart of Lions strengthened their position at the top of the league table with a narrow 1-0 win over Young Apostles at the Kpando Sports Stadium on Boxing Day.
Kwesi Pong emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 86th minute to give the hosts all three points. The victory extended Heart of Lions’ lead to three points ahead of second-placed Bibiani GoldStars, who are set to play Asante Kotoko in Kumasi on Friday.
Heart of Lions dominated possession, controlling 64% of the game compared to Young Apostles’ 36%. They registered six goal attempts, with five off target and just one on target. However, their persistence was rewarded late in the game when Pong found the back of the net.
Young Apostles, on the other hand, struggled to match the home side’s intensity. They managed three goal attempts, two of which were on target, but were unable to breach the Lions’ solid defense. The visitors earned three corner kicks but failed to convert their opportunities into goals.
Heart of Lions showcased defensive resilience, with their goalkeeper making crucial saves to secure a clean sheet. The team also displayed commendable discipline, avoiding any yellow cards, while Young Apostles received two bookings during the match.
This victory marks Heart of Lions’ fourth consecutive win, underscoring their credentials as title contenders. Meanwhile, Young Apostles continue to struggle with inconsistency, finding it difficult to keep pace in a competitive league.
