German-born Ghanaian winger Jamie Leweling delivered an impressive performance, assisting Stuttgart’s only goal in their 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Playing the full 90 minutes at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Leweling was instrumental in Stuttgart’s response after Real Madrid took the lead early in the second half.
Kylian Mbappé broke the deadlock just 20 seconds into the second half, but Stuttgart found a way back in the 68th minute when Leweling whipped a precise ball into the six-yard box from a corner. Deniz Undav met it with a header to equalize against Thibaut Courtois.
Despite Stuttgart’s fight, Real Madrid regained the lead in the 83rd minute when Antonio Rüdiger headed in Luka Modrić’s corner. Brazilian youngster Endrick sealed the victory for Madrid in stoppage time, firing a low strike past Alexander Nübel to make it 3-1.
Stuttgart will now shift focus to their Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund on September 22. Leweling, who received a Black Stars call-up in 2020 under coach Charles Akonnor, will be hoping to earn a national team recall under current coach Otto Addo following his standout performance.
