Ernest Nuamah, the forward for the Black Meteors (U-23) team, has issued a press statement apologizing for their disappointing performance at the U-23 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and addressing accusations of being unpatriotic.
Ghana’s U-23 team suffered an unexpected early exit from the U-23 AFCON, which resulted in them missing out on a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The team’s poor performance has been attributed to the attitude of some players, including Ernest Nuamah, who reportedly showed reluctance in joining the team for the competition despite his successful season with Nordjaelland.
In his statement, Nuamah dismissed these reports and clarified that his decision was due to health concerns after a demanding season with Nordsjaelland in Denmark.
The statement read: “I have returned to my base to work hard, strive, and grow. This break has been filled with unlocked dreams, lessons, and personal growth while on national duty.
“In accepting this growth path, I’ll take this opportunity to clear unfounded stories of choosing an uninvited All Star Game over Ghana & any one of us feeling bigger than our gifted U23 mates.
“I had issues over health concerns with my team after a long season & fatigue to join the U23 since the tournament was not on FIFA calendar explains why I had to leave after the 2nd game.
“No excuses but our performances as a group was below expectations but personally I could do better. As a group if we ever have the opportunity again, Ghana deserves better.
“I made some wrong decisions but I am grateful for this opportunity,” he added.
