Ghanaian sprinters Benjamin Azamati, Barnabas Aggerh, and Ansah Sarfo have all secured spots in the semi-finals of the men’s 100m competition at the ongoing 2023 African Games.
Azamati led the charge by clinching victory in Heat 5 with a swift time of 10.54 seconds, with Nigeria’s Okon Sunday closely following in second place with a time of 10.55 seconds.
Notably, Azamati’s compatriots, Aggerh and Sarfo, also showcased impressive performances. Aggerh secured his semi-final berth by finishing second in Heat 2 with a time of 10.46 seconds, while Sarfo clinched fourth place in Heat 1 with a time of 10.34 seconds.
The 100m semi-final showdown is scheduled to take place later on Monday at the University of Ghana (UG) Stadium in Accra, promising an exciting display of athleticism.
Meanwhile, in boxing, Ghana has demonstrated strong contention for medals with 10 out of 16 boxers vying for podium finishes in their respective weight categories.
Abu Kamoko, Theophilus Allotey, and Mohammed Aryeetey have already secured bronze medals by advancing to the semi-finals in the 48kg, 51kg, and 86kg categories, respectively. Additionally, Olympic bronze medalist Samuel Takyi is among six boxers who have progressed to the quarter-finals in their weight divisions.
Ghana’s overall medal count has seen a remarkable surge in recent days, notably propelled by the weightlifting team’s outstanding performance, which yielded an impressive haul of 41 medals over the weekend. With a total of 46 medals – including nine gold, 22 silver, and 15 bronze – Ghana currently sits sixth overall on the medal table, showcasing the nation’s growing prowess on the continental sporting stage.
