Ghana’s remarkable 24-year unbeaten streak at the Baba Yara Stadium came to a stunning end as Angola secured a 1-0 victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Despite fielding a strong lineup, including stars like Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Jordan Ayew, the Black Stars were unable to find the back of the net.
The match began with promise for Ghana as Antoine Semenyo made an early attacking run, but his cross failed to connect with a teammate. Angola, however, proved a formidable challenge, with forwards Mabululu, Gelson Dala, and Rayo Vallecano’s Randy Nteka threatening Ghana’s defense but also struggling to convert their chances.
In the second half, the Black Stars turned up the pressure. Fatawu Issahaku won a free kick that Kudus delivered with precision, only for Angola’s goalkeeper, Neblu, to pull off an outstanding save. Ghana controlled possession and launched multiple attacks, but the Angolan defense stood resolute.
The decisive moment came in the 93rd minute when substitute Felicio Joao Milson capitalized on a close-range opportunity to score the only goal of the match, handing Angola a crucial win.
This defeat marked Ghana’s first home loss in Kumasi since 2000, when they were beaten by South Africa. The Black Stars now face a crucial match against Niger on September 9 in Berkane, Morocco, as they seek to revive their AFCON qualifying campaign.
