Henry Asante Twum, Communication Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has explained the absence of defender Gideon Mensah from the Black Stars squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
In a press conference at the GFA headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 29, 2024, Twum revealed that Mensah, the Auxerre left-back, has been sidelined due to a muscle tear.
“Gideon Mensah is out with a muscle tear” he said at a press conference held at the Ghana FA headquarters in Accra.
Mensah joins Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ernest Nuamah on the injury list and will not participate in the upcoming qualifiers.
Coach Otto Addo announced his 23-man squad for the games against Angola and Niger, including key players like Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Salisu, and Jordan Ayew. However, captain Andre Ayew has been omitted from the squad for the second consecutive time.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Angola at Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Morocco on September 9.
The qualifiers are crucial for securing a spot in the tournament, with the top two teams from each group earning automatic qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations.
