Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President, Ben Nunoo Mensah, has voiced support for the growing calls to dismiss Black Stars head coach Otto Addo following the team’s dismal performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Black Stars endured their worst-ever AFCON qualifying campaign, failing to win any of their six matches. The team recorded three draws and three defeats, finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points. This failure marks the first time in 20 years that the four-time African champions will miss the continental tournament, set to take place in Morocco next year.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Ben Nunoo Mensah stressed the importance of accountability, asserting that someone must take responsibility for the team’s failure. “Ghanaians have every right to call for the sack of the coach,” he said. “I believe that somebody must take responsibility for Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the AFCON tournament. Failing to win a single game in the qualifiers and also failing to qualify is a total embarrassment.”
The Black Stars will now turn their attention to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they face Chad and Madagascar in March 2025. However, with the current atmosphere, questions remain about the leadership of Otto Addo and whether he will remain at the helm.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is yet to announce a decision regarding Addo’s future. The Executive Council met last week to review his technical reports following the team’s disappointing AFCON campaign.
