Former Ghana international Godwin Attram is optimistic the Black Stars can advance beyond the group phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their poor run of results ahead of the tournament.
Ghana heads into the competition in the United States, Canada and Mexico without a victory in their last five warm-up matches, a situation that has raised doubts among supporters about the team’s readiness for the global event.
However, Attram believes the appointment of experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz could make a major difference for the four-time African champions.
“The FA did well to appoint him, and we hope that whatever the country wants, he will deliver,” Attram told Graphic Sports.
The former striker also brushed aside concerns over Ghana’s difficult Group L opponents, which include England, Croatia and Panama.
“Why not?” he replied.
“At the end of the day, it’s just football, and if we prepare ourselves very well, in tune with whatever the players must do, I’m very sure we will qualify out of the group,” he added.
The Black Stars are expected to continue their preparations with an international friendly against Wales on June 2 at Cardiff City Stadium.
Ghana will be participating in the FIFA World Cup for the fifth time and will be targeting a place in the knockout stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance in 2010. The team exited at the group stage during the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.
Coach Queiroz has already unveiled a provisional 28-man squad, with the final list expected to be announced on June 1.
The Black Stars will begin their World Cup journey against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27 in their remaining Group L fixtures.
