Asante Kotoko secured their first victory of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season after defeating Heart of Lions 2-1 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors responded strongly to their opening-day draw against newly promoted Debibi United, with coach Eric Tinkler’s side producing a more determined performance to collect all three points on home soil.
Kotoko broke the deadlock in the 27th minute through Emmanuel Mamah.
Patrick Asiedu sent a dangerous low cross into the Heart of Lions penalty area, and Mamah reacted quickly to get the final touch and guide the ball into the net.
The opening goal settled Kotoko and gave the home side greater confidence as they looked to control proceedings.
Heart of Lions, who had enjoyed a favourable recent record against the Porcupine Warriors, struggled to create clear opportunities as Kotoko’s defence remained organised.
Kotoko eventually extended their lead in the 62nd minute.
Mamah turned provider, cutting the ball back for Isaac Opoku Agyemang, who was perfectly positioned to finish from close range and make it 2-0.
With a two-goal cushion, Kotoko appeared to be heading comfortably towards victory. However, Heart of Lions were handed a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty late in the match.
Francis Odoom stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to reduce the deficit and give the visitors renewed hope.
Kotoko’s task became even more difficult after Hamaid Fuseini was shown a straight red card, leaving the hosts with 10 men for the closing stages.
Heart of Lions pushed forward in search of a second goal, but Kotoko defended resolutely to protect their advantage and secure a crucial home victory.
The result gives Kotoko four points from their opening two matches after their 2-2 draw against Debibi United on the opening weekend.
It also represents an important step towards Tinkler’s objective of turning the Baba Yara Sports Stadium into a difficult venue for visiting teams.
Before the match, the South African coach had called on his players to establish a strong home record while urging the club’s supporters to create an intimidating atmosphere for opponents.
The victory also ends Heart of Lions’ impressive unbeaten run against Kotoko. The Kpando-based club had avoided defeat in their previous six encounters with the Porcupine Warriors, recording four wins and two draws.
Heart of Lions remain without a victory after two matches and will now be hoping to respond when they host Swedru All Blacks in their next league fixture.
Kotoko, meanwhile, will travel to face Samartex as they look to build on Sunday’s victory and maintain their positive start to the campaign.
