Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has addressed the comparisons being drawn between him and Sudan’s head coach, James Kwesi Appiah, a Ghanaian football legend and former Black Stars coach.
Following Ghana’s recent disappointing results in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, there has been speculation about how the two managers measure up.
Speaking on the matter, Addo acknowledged that such comparisons are natural but emphasized the differences between their coaching styles and personalities.
“So this is a normal thing. People tend to react to these kinds of things, but it’s very, very difficult to compare me and Kwesi Appiah,” Addo said. “Kwesi Appiah has his own personality, his own strengths, his own strategy, and I’m a different person. I have my own personality, my own strategies, my own tactics, whatsoever.”
While both are proud Ghanaians, Addo reiterated that their approaches to coaching are unique. “We are both Ghanaians, that’s true, but it’s difficult to compare,” he added.
The Black Stars coach admitted his own dissatisfaction with the team’s recent performances and took responsibility for the results. “Surely I can understand with these results that everybody is not satisfied. I’m not satisfied myself. I turn things around, I overthink things. What could I have done better? I’m the first to ask myself these questions.”
As Ghana looks to bounce back in the qualifiers, Addo remains focused on improving his team’s performances while respecting the legacy of coaches like Kwesi Appiah.
