Dan Oppong, a former player for Hearts of Oak, points to inadequate recruitment as the reason behind the dwindling excitement surrounding the iconic clash between Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.
The upcoming match, set to take place at the Baba Yara Stadium on matchday 31 of the Ghana Premier League, sees both clubs grappling with form struggles. As Kotoko recently suffered a defeat against Berekum Chelsea and Hearts of Oak narrowly lost to Aduana Stars, the once-thrilling Super Clash has noticeably lost its luster.
According to Oppong, the historical rivalry between the two powerhouse clubs has been overshadowed by lackluster player signings. He emphasizes the need for experienced and matured players to elevate the clubs’ performance, particularly in continental competitions.
“Kotoko and Hearts fans always expect their club to be playing in Africa. And if you are playing in Africa, you have to get matured players who can help the club to excel. Previously, both teams were signing top-notch players but the narrative has changed this time”
“You will see Kotoko signing players from the Division Two league. Truth be told, not all players from such level can withstand the pressure. Before I joined Hearts of Oak, I had featured for several club so I had the experience to play”
“I will attribute their decline of both to their recruitment. It has not been the best in recent times. Matches between them has fallen because of how players are recruited into the teams” he told Kessben FM
As the anticipation builds for the upcoming showdown, Asante Kotoko occupies the 10th spot with 40 points, while Hearts of Oak trails closely behind in 12th position with 38 points after 30 matches. Despite their current standings, the Super Clash remains a pivotal fixture in Ghanaian football, drawing fervent support from both sides.
