Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has expressed his excitement over Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi after the club’s record signing impressed in his unofficial debut against AS Monaco.
The 20-year-old midfielder was handed a starting role in Coventry’s final pre-season fixture ahead of the new campaign after completing his high-profile move from Danish club FC Nordsjælland.
Yirenkyi immediately showed why Coventry invested heavily in him, producing an energetic performance highlighted by his defensive awareness, relentless movement across the pitch and a quality assist for Loum Tchaouna in the match.
Following the game, Lampard revealed that Coventry had to convince the Ghanaian youngster to join the newly promoted Premier League side, with several European clubs also interested in securing his signature.
“We have a lot of belief in Caleb here. He is a player we are very happy to have brought to the club. He was wanted by many clubs around Europe. We sold the project to him,” Lampard said.
Yirenkyi’s transfer from Nordsjælland is reportedly worth an initial €27 million, with the fee potentially rising to €30 million through performance-related bonuses.
The deal represents Coventry City’s biggest-ever transfer investment and marks another record-breaking move for the club during the summer transfer window. It is also reported to be the highest transfer fee ever received by a Scandinavian club, surpassing Nordsjælland’s previous record sale of Ernest Nuamah to Lyon in 2023.
Despite Yirenkyi’s young age, Lampard believes the Ghanaian midfielder has the potential to reach the highest level in football.
“He’s a good, talented player and young. We believe he’s going to have a big career. He’s a big addition to the club, and we saw signs against Monaco. Hopefully, we see a lot more,” the former Chelsea midfielder added.
Yirenkyi will now prepare for his first competitive season with Coventry City as they return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, beginning with a difficult opening fixture away to reigning champions Arsenal on August 21.
