Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has hailed the signing of Jordan Ayew, describing the Ghana captain as a player with “real pedigree” whose experience and versatility will be a major asset to the Blades this season.
The 34-year-old forward joined the Championship side on a one-year contract as a free agent after leaving Leicester City at the end of his deal.
Wilder revealed that discussions moved quickly and expressed his delight at securing the services of one of Africa’s most experienced forwards.
“I spoke last week about being close to getting someone in from the free agent market, and things did move quite quickly, so I am really pleased to have Jordan with us.
“We’re talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game. Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he’s someone with real pedigree.”
The Sheffield United boss believes Ayew’s ability to operate across the frontline will provide valuable tactical flexibility throughout the campaign.
“He did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances and has played all across the front positions during his career, which gives us plenty of options.”
Ayew arrives at Bramall Lane with over a decade of Premier League and international experience, having represented clubs including Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City, while earning more than 100 caps for Ghana.
Wilder is optimistic the experienced Ghanaian can replicate the positive impact made by previous free-agent arrivals Pat Bamford and Jaïro Riedewald.
“We used the free market to great effect last season, and we believe Jordan can come in and have an impact here just like Pat (Bamford) and Jaïro (Riedewald) did.”
Ayew is expected to play a key leadership role both on and off the pitch as Sheffield United target promotion back to the Premier League.
