Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew has expressed heartfelt gratitude towards former manager Roy Hodgson, who stepped down from his role due to illness.
Ayew, who featured prominently under Hodgson this season, credited the veteran manager for his mentorship and support, which he believes contributed to his growth both on and off the pitch.
“Roy has been more than a manager to me; he’s been a guiding light, helping me develop as a player and as a person,” Ayew remarked, visibly moved by Hodgson’s departure.
The Ghanaian striker, who started in 21 out of 22 league games under Hodgson, lauded the manager’s trust and faith in his abilities, acknowledging the significant impact it had on his performance.
“I owe a lot to Roy for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to showcase my abilities. His influence on my career is immeasurable, and I’ll forever be grateful,” Ayew expressed with sincerity.
“I can’t thank him enough. He’s made me who I am today as a player, as a man.
“I came to this football club because he, Dougie (Freedman) and Steve (Parish) decided to bring me in…”He’s been so influential in my career and I can’t thank him enough.
“He’s a father figure for me. There’s no doubt about that. “I hope he recovers as soon as possible.
“We know that it’s not easy for him. It’s not easy for us, but life goes on and we need to defend the football club and that’s what we’re doing.”
Hodgson’s departure has paved the way for the appointment of Oliver Glasner as Crystal Palace’s new manager. Despite the managerial transition, Ayew remains steadfast in his commitment to delivering on the pitch.
Ayew’s tribute to Hodgson comes on the heels of his stunning goal against Everton in a 1-1 draw, further highlighting his value to the team as they navigate through changes in leadership.
With his third goal of the season and involvement in a total of eight goals for Palace in the Premier League, Ayew’s contributions continue to be pivotal as the team prepares to face Burnley at Selhurst Park in the upcoming fixture.
