History smiles on Algeria as perfect AFCON start raises title hopes

Algeria are showing serious title ambition at the Africa Cup of Nations after winning their first four matches of the tournament. This is only the third time in their history they have achieved such a strong start at AFCON.

The last two times it happened, the story ended in glory. In 1990, Algeria won all their early games and went on to lift the trophy on home soil. The same pattern repeated in 2019, when the Fennecs again enjoyed a perfect run and were crowned champions.

Even more interesting is the familiar path history has set. In both 1990 and 2019, Algeria beat Nigeria at some point during the tournament before going on to win the title. With Nigeria once again in their path, fans are beginning to believe that history could repeat itself.

As confidence grows and momentum builds, Algeria look determined to follow the same winning road and chase a third AFCON crown.
