Hearts of Oak legend, Yaw Amankwah Mireku says he is the greatest player to have ever captained the Phobians.
Amankwah Mireku, who dedicated a decade of his football career to Hearts of Oak before moving on to the Indian top-flight side Viva Kerala in 2007, is renowned for his achievements with the Phobians.
During his illustrious tenure at Hearts of Oak, the 43-year-old led the team to numerous prestigious titles, including the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, CAF Super Cup, six league titles, and two FA Cup trophies.
In an interview on Kumasi-based Kessben FM, Yaw Amankwah Mireku confidently declared himself as the greatest captain in the history of Hearts of Oak.
“Hearts of Oak have never had a player of my calibre since its inception. I can say that I have been the greatest captain since 1911. I played an integral role in winning the CAF Champions League, Confederation Cup, Super Cup, six league titles among others. No player has achieved that in the club’s history,” proudly stated Amankwah Mireku on Kessben FM on Friday, October 13, 2023.
Born in Accra, Amankwah Mireku initiated his career with Hearts of Oak and became the team’s captain. After a decade with Hearts of Oak, the legendary defender transferred to the I-League side Viva Kerala on June 12, 2007.
In January 2008, Amankwah Mireku signed a contract with the then Division One League side Pure Joy Stars. After eleven months with the club, he moved to Wa All Stars in December 2008.
Amankwah Mireku proudly earned 16 caps for the Black Stars from 2001 to 2005, with his senior national team debut taking place on March 11, 2001, against Nigeria.
