Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Ahmed, popularly known as ‘Mohammed Polo,’ has shared the extraordinary story of how his football career began under unusual circumstances.
In an interview with JoySports, the 1978 AFCON winner revealed that his path to football was paved at a time when teenagers were discouraged from pursuing the sport. He also emphasized his unique distinction of having played across four different generations.
“I am the only player in Ghana to have played with four generations and a player at the same time as a coach… Today, I am a coach, and I want to impact. Some of us have something special for these younger ones. I feel sad; Ghana football shouldn’t be where it is now,” he stated.
Polo described his early football journey as almost mystical, saying, “It all started in a very mysterious way because it never happens. It looks like it was destined to happen because I didn’t know what I was doing, even though I used to play football… we played with the giants.”
He also explained the origins of his famous nickname, Polo, which was inspired by his passion for horse racing. “I enjoy watching polo games… One time, there was a match, and I told them I had to watch polo first—that’s how the name Polo came about,” he recalled.
Mohammed Polo’s story remains an inspiring testament to his dedication to Ghanaian football, both as a player and now as a coach, as he strives to pass on his experience to the next generation.
