Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has reaffirmed the police service’s commitment to holding perpetrators of stadium violence accountable.
His statement follows the arrest of two more individuals linked to the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley. This brings the total number of arrests to five after violent clashes erupted during Asante Kotoko’s match against Nsoatreman FC last Sunday in Nsoatre.
During a crucial meeting between the Police Administration and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) at the Police Headquarters, Dr. Dampare stressed the need to protect football as a peaceful and enjoyable sport.
“We have arrested five people, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who engage in violence are held accountable. We must all rise up to the responsibility of ensuring that football is enjoyed in a safe and peaceful environment. We owe it to the people of this country and to humanity to make football a game that brings joy and excitement, not death and destruction,” he stated.
He further emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures, stating that the police would not only respond to incidents but also implement strategies to prevent violence at football matches.
GFA Executive Council Member Fred Acheampong extended his sympathies to the family of Nana Pooley and called for urgent measures to enhance security at football venues.
“We must take immediate steps to ensure that our stadiums are safe for everyone—players, supporters, and officials alike. This tragic incident should serve as a wake-up call for all of us,” Acheampong said.
He also praised the IGP for his swift action and urged a thorough review of security protocols at stadiums to prevent such incidents in the future.
