Former Black Stars player and current Dreams FC coach Abdul Karim Zito has expressed his support for the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to revoke Baba Yara Stadium’s license for hosting international matches until necessary renovations are completed.
This ruling followed Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Angola and was announced on Wednesday, September 11.
As a result of CAF’s decision, Ghana will be forced to play its upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches, including two crucial fixtures against Sudan on October 11 and 15, outside the country.
Speaking on the matter, Zito fully endorsed the decision, stating, “I’m OK with CAF’s decision. This will help us improve and do things better. It seems like every time we use Baba Yara, there’s trouble with the facilities.”
Reflecting on his experience during the African Confederation Cup in Rwanda, Zito noted, “When I went to Rwanda, I saw their facilities and realized we are far, far behind. Even the coaches’ dressing rooms there tell you something about the standards.”
In response to the ban, Ghana’s Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to request an inspection of the University of Ghana Stadium as a potential alternative venue for the Black Stars’ home games.
The Legon Stadium, renovated for the 2023 African Games, could serve as a temporary home for Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers, having successfully hosted several football matches during the competition.
