Athletic Bilbao forward, Inaki Williams, expresses his readiness to represent Ghana at the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The Spain-born forward made the decision to switch nationalities and play for the Black Stars in June 2022 following a heartfelt conversation with his grandfather.
Tragically, Williams’ grandfather passed away a few months after the forward’s debut for the West African nation. The 29-year-old sees playing in the tournament as a fulfillment of a promise made to his family.
In a pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Sevilla on Monday, Williams shared, “It means a lot. It is a promise at the family level. It is something nice for me. My grandfather passed away last summer, and I know that he would be very excited if he could see me play in this Africa Cup.”
Having already made nine appearances for Ghana and scoring the winner in the World Cup qualifiers opener against Madagascar in November, Williams is set to join the Black Stars next week for preparations ahead of the tournament in neighboring Ivory Coast.
