Newly appointed Black Queens head coach, Kim Björkegren, has pledged to elevate Ghana’s position in the FIFA world rankings following his official unveiling.
The Swedish tactician, who replaces Nora Häuptle, signed a two-year contract with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after Häuptle’s departure to coach Zambia.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, February 14, 2025, Björkegren expressed his ambition to improve the Black Queens’ standing.
“I know there has been a lot of good work done in the past couple of years. I’m aware of the Volta project, and that’s something we will continue working on to maintain positive momentum,” he stated.
Addressing Ghana’s current FIFA ranking, the 43-year-old emphasized the need for progress.
“We are currently ranked 66th, and honestly, that’s far too low for the quality we have. In the long term, we will definitely improve,” he added.
Björkegren’s appointment comes as Ghana looks to reclaim its status as a powerhouse in women’s football. His first test will be a friendly against Morocco as part of preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) later this year.
