Ghanaian young defender, Jarell Quansah is thrilled to have achieved his Liverpool debut on Sunday, August 27, 2023, during the impressive 2-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United.
The Reds found themselves trailing 1-0 in the 77th minute and had Virgil van Dijk sent off. It was at this crucial juncture that Jürgen Klopp made the decision to substitute the 20-year-old Quansah into the match, replacing Joel Matip.
Quansah played a pivotal role as Liverpool mounted a remarkable comeback, ultimately securing victory with a double from Darwin Nunez.
Reflecting on his debut, Quansah shared his experience with Liverpoolfc.com in a post-match interview: “[The manager] just said that I’m ready for it and I felt ready, but as ready as you can be in this scenario,” Quansah said.
The young player emphasized the importance of such critical moments in a game: “You don’t expect to make your debut away with 10 men at St. James’ Park 1-0 down, so it’s hard to put into words at this minute.”
Quansah also highlighted the collaborative nature of the sport and the necessity for everyone to be prepared: “They are the most important times. It’s easy to go under but we have got strong characters in this group. When Virgil, the captain, was sent off, everyone else was ready to step up and it’s a testament to that.
“It’s a team game, everyone needs to be ready so from the manager to all of the players, players on the bench, you have to be ready at any moment because any scenario can happen and you have got to be ready to take that opportunity.”
