Former Ghana international Hans Adu Sarpei has raised concerns over the Black Stars’ preparedness for the FIFA World Cup 2026, pointing to a lack of confidence, cohesion and experience within the current squad.
Ghana approach the tournament under a cloud of uncertainty following a run of inconsistent performances and the recent dismissal of Otto Addo as head coach.
The instability has intensified scrutiny over the team’s direction, with questions emerging about whether the present group can replicate past successes on the global stage.
Sarpei, a member of Ghana’s celebrated 2010 World Cup squad, drew a sharp contrast between that generation and the current team.
He highlighted the absence of continuity and leadership as key challenges facing the Black Stars, noting that his era benefited from years of playing together and a strong collective identity.
“Don’t compare the 2010 squad to this current one. They are two completely different teams,” he told Joy Sports.
“We had more confidence, more experience and bigger personalities in the team than we do now. We had also played together for about three or four years before that World Cup.
“Now it’s different. New players are coming in, there are issues involving the coaching situation and the players, and they didn’t go to the Nations Cup. There are so many things happening now, so it’s not easy for the players.”
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, with the tournament set to kick off on June 11.
