Republic of Ireland defender of Ghanaian heritage, James Abankwah, delivered an impressive performance for Watford on Saturday afternoon, contributing to the team’s 2-0 victory over Derby County in the English Championship.
The talented defender, who joined Watford on loan from Udinese just a few days prior, showcased enough quality in training to earn a starting spot in the Round 27 encounter.
Deployed on the left side of a back-four system by manager Tom Cleverly, Abankwah seamlessly fit into the team’s defensive structure and played a key role in maintaining a clean sheet. His efforts on the pitch were rewarded with a solid 7.0 match rating before he was substituted for Ryan Andrews in the 76th minute.
Watford began the match on a strong note, taking the lead just four minutes into the game. Moroccan midfielder Imran Louza opened the scoring with a superb effort to give the visitors an early advantage.
In the second half, DR Congo international Edo Kayembe added a second goal to secure a commanding 2-0 victory for Watford against Derby County.
Reflecting on his debut win, James Abankwah will undoubtedly be eager to build on this performance in the games ahead.
