Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku has expressed his delight after playing a key role in Istanbul Basaksehir’s UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers against FC Iberia 1999.

The Black Stars center-back completed the full match as the Turkish side secured a 2-0 victory, advancing to the playoff round with a 3-0 aggregate win. Istanbul Basaksehir is now set to face St. Patrick’s in a crucial tie, with a spot in the Conference League group stage on the line.

“Playoff round. There we land,” Opoku shared enthusiastically on social media following the match.

The game was decided in the second half, with goals from Krzysztof Piątek and Dimitris Pelkas ensuring Basaksehir’s progression.

As the focus shifts to the Turkish Super Lig, Opoku will now prepare for Istanbul Basaksehir’s upcoming home match against Alanyaspor on Sunday night.

Opoku’s impressive start to the season is a positive sign for Black Stars coach Otto Addo, as Ghana gears up for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in September, where they will face Angola and Nigeria in the opening matches.
