Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana played a pivotal role in Southampton’s thrilling 3-2 win over Stoke City in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, delivering a crucial assist for the winning goal that secured the Saints’ place in the next round.

The Round of 16 clash at St. Mary’s Stadium saw Southampton narrowly prevail in an intense finish. Although Sulemana wasn’t part of the starting lineup, his presence on the bench turned out to be a strategic advantage.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the final moments, Southampton’s manager opted to inject fresh attacking energy by bringing Sulemana onto the field in the 81st minute. He replaced defender Jan Bednarek, adding pace and creativity to the Saints’ offense.

Southampton initially took the lead in the 19th minute, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis scoring from an assist by Mateus Fernandes. Adam Armstrong then extended the lead, converting a penalty in the 35th minute. Stoke City, however, mounted a strong response: Ashley Phillips scored just before halftime, and Thomas Cannon’s goal in the 54th minute brought the game level at 2-2.

With the match appearing to head toward a draw, Sulemana’s late entry changed the game’s course. In the 88th minute, he set up James Bree for the third and decisive goal, clinching victory for Southampton.

The Saints’ victory at St. Mary’s Stadium advances their EFL Cup journey, with Sulemana’s impactful late-game performance showcasing his valuable contributions to the squad.
