Former Tottenham Hotspur player Kevin Prince Boateng has cast doubt on Arsenal’s chances of winning a title this year.
The former Ghanaian international expressed his opinion during a discussion on Rio Ferdinand’s ‘FIVE’ show, where he questioned the presence of winners in Arsenal’s current squad.
Boateng firmly stated, “I don’t see you this year, maybe in two years because to win something you need winners. “You know, that’s what I’ve learnt in the clubs, you need players who won big things because they know at the end of the day what it means to win something.”
Last season, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal made a strong title challenge and was in contention for much of the campaign. Injuries, in particular, were seen as a key factor that ultimately led to Arsenal narrowly missing out on the title to Manchester City.
Some Arsenal fans may argue against Boateng’s assessment. Arsenal signed players like Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City last summer, both of whom have won titles. Additionally, while Arsenal’s squad is youthful, it includes players with successful track records. For example, Kai Havertz scored the winning goal in a Champions League final.
Boateng’s perspective certainly raises questions, as Arsenal demonstrated their ability to compete for the title in the recent past. However, it remains to be seen how the current Arsenal squad will fare in their quest for silverware, especially when they face Manchester City in what could be an early title-deciding match on Sunday.
