Asante Kotoko head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, has addressed the ongoing competition in his goalkeeping department following Mohammed Camara’s standout performance in their opening match of the 2024-2025 Ghana Premier League season.
With first-choice goalkeeper and team captain Frederick Asare away on national duty with the Black Stars, Camara seized his opportunity, delivering a match-winning performance that earned him the Man of the Match award.
Asked in a post-match interview whether Asare’s return would create a dilemma regarding who would be the club’s number one goalkeeper, Ogum was diplomatic but hinted at his confidence in Camara.
“I said there wasn’t going to be a problem in the absence of Asare because we have Camara, who is good and the safest pair of hands you can think of. He showed it throughout the game,” Ogum stated. “When Asare returns, we all know he’s a national team goalkeeper. The three of them [goalkeepers] will keep working, and on matchday, we’ll just put the one we think suits the game.”
Ogum expressed his satisfaction with the depth in Kotoko’s goalkeeping department, emphasizing the importance of competition and the quality each goalkeeper brings to the team.
“As a team, it’s good for us to have excellent goalkeepers so that when the last line of defense is beaten, he will be there to save the team,” Ogum added. “You saw Camara did that a lot during the game. I want to encourage him to keep his confidence, work hard, and stay focused throughout the season.”
With Camara’s impressive display and Asare’s pending return, the competition for the number one spot at Kotoko is heating up, providing Ogum with a good selection headache as the season progresses.
