Kwesi Appiah has provided insight into his role as the Head of Sporting Affairs at Asante Kotoko following a reshuffle within the club’s management structure.
Appiah was initially named as the technical director of the club when the Interim Management Committee (IMC) was formed after the dissolution of the board led by Dr. Kwame Kyei and the management headed by Nana Yaw Amponsah. However, in November, Kotoko announced that club legend and former coach Malik Jabir would take over as technical director.
Explaining the decision during an interview with Asempa FM, Appiah revealed that his responsibilities as head coach of the Sudan national team made it difficult for him to fully commit to the role at Kotoko.
“I accepted the technical director role initially, but I realized I did not deserve it due to my frequent absences because of my work with the Sudanese national team,” Appiah admitted. “We needed someone who could be fully present, so we agreed to bring in Malik Jabir, who has vast experience, having coached various national teams.”
Appiah added that the reshuffle was also intended to allow head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum to focus solely on the team’s on-field performance.
“We wanted Prosper Narteh Ogum to concentrate entirely on coaching, which is why Malik Jabir was brought in. Malik is a former player who is willing to take on this role and travel with the team. For matches he cannot attend, an assistant technical director will step in to support Prosper,” Appiah explained.
The changes come as Kotoko prepare for the highly anticipated Super Clash against archrivals Hearts of Oak in a Matchday 13 fixture of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League. The match will be played at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, December 15.
