Kwesi Appiah, head coach of the Sudan national team and Head of Sporting Affairs at Asante Kotoko, has stated that he will not be bringing any more Sudanese players to Ghana following a controversial incident involving two players from his national team.
Appiah’s comments come after Sudanese players AbdoelKarem Yagoub and Esmat Abdulhamid absconded from the team’s hotel during a trip to the USA for a friendly against DC United on October 12. The players had sought permission to leave and change money, but their request was declined. However, CCTV footage revealed that the two players sneaked out of the hotel, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
Reflecting on the situation, Appiah expressed his disappointment and frustration. “The truth is, because of the two players who ran away from Asante Kotoko’s camp, I am not willing to bring any Sudanese players to Ghana,” he told Asempa FM.
Despite the incident, Appiah revealed that Sudan’s captain, Ramadan Agab, has expressed an interest in playing for Kotoko one day. “Ramadan Agab has said he would like to play for Asante Kotoko, but at the moment, I am not interested in bringing any Sudanese player to Ghana,” he added.
Yagoub and Abdulhamid were among the 12 players brought in by Kotoko following the departure of over 21 players last summer.
