Mahmoud Kahraba, the striker for Al Ahly, has been named the joint top goalscorer of the 2023 CAF Champions League, sharing the title with Peter Shalulile of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Al Ahly secured their record-breaking 11th CAF Champions League title by securing a late 1-1 draw against Wydad Casablanca at the Mohammed V Stadium.
Having won the first leg 2-1 in Cairo, Al Ahly emerged victorious with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline, finally breaking the curse of Casablanca.
In the Cairo game, Percy Tau gave Al Ahly the lead just before halftime, and Kahraba doubled the scoreline in the second half.
Kahraba’s goal in that match was his sixth in the 2023 CAF Champions League, making him the joint top goalscorer alongside Peter Shalulile of Mamelodi Sundowns.
It’s important to note that goals are only counted from the group stages onward. Kahraba scored four goals during this period, including a memorable hat-trick against Coton Sport and a crucial goal against Al Hilal from Sudan.
Additionally, Kahraba found the back of the net against Espérance Sportive de Tunis in Rades, securing a 3-0 victory for Al Ahly, before scoring once again in the match against Wydad in Cairo.
This latest triumph marks Kahraba’s third CAF Champions League title with Al Ahly, having previously lifted the trophy in 2020 and 2021, defeating his former club Zamalek and Kaizer Chiefs, respectively.
