Medeama SC have opened talks to sign experienced forward Stephen Amankona as they continue preparations for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
The Tarkwa-based club have identified the 26-year-old striker as a major target to add more quality and firepower to their attacking department, with the player currently available as a free agent.
Amankona became unattached following an unsuccessful spell in Egypt with Smouha SC, where he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. The situation eventually led to discussions over ending his contract, leaving the forward open to a new challenge.
The former Berekum Chelsea striker remains one of the most proven goalscorers in Ghana’s top flight. During his time with Chelsea, Amankona won the Ghana Premier League Golden Boot in two consecutive seasons, scoring 37 goals in 58 appearances and earning a reputation as one of the division’s most clinical finishers.
He also had a spell with Asante Kotoko, where he found the net seven times in 15 appearances before returning to Berekum Chelsea to continue his impressive scoring record.
Medeama believe Amankona’s experience and goal-scoring ability could provide a major boost as the club prepares for another demanding campaign, including domestic competition and continental football.
The Yellow and Mauve finished as Ghana Premier League runners-up last season and are determined to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. Adding a proven attacker like Amankona would be a significant move as they look to challenge for honours once again.
Negotiations between Medeama and the striker’s representatives are reportedly ongoing, with both parties hopeful of reaching an agreement in the coming days.
