Former Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien has joined in celebrating the Black Stars’ qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The four-time African champions fought back from a goal down to defeat the Central African Republic and secure their spot at the tournament next year.
Essien, who participated in the 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, expressed his congratulations to the team on social media.
“Congratulations. Bravo boys,” he posted on Twitter.
The Central African Republic initially startled Ghana by scoring the opening goal 25 minutes into the game, courtesy of Louis Mafouta. However, the Black Stars equalized two minutes before halftime, with Mohammed Kudus finding the net, and Ernest Nuamah netted the winning goal with just four minutes remaining.
Ghana is striving for their first Africa Cup of Nations title since their last victory in 1982. Despite coming close on three occasions, reaching the finals in 1992, 2010, and 2015, they have yet to claim the coveted trophy.
