Michael Ofosu Appiah has disclosed the reason behind his nickname “CID” during his time playing for Asante Kotoko.
The former Asante Kotoko player explained that the nickname was given to him by his teammates due to his exceptional defensive abilities on the field.
The acronym “CID” stands for “Crime Investigative Department,” drawing a parallel between his defensive prowess and the investigative skills of the real CID.
Appiah expressed pride in the nickname, as it symbolized his commitment to preventing opponents from scoring and his dedication to defending the team’s interests. He credited his teammates for recognizing and appreciating his defensive contributions, leading to the creation of the memorable moniker.
“My name CID was from the Sports Council when I was a young player for them and not Kotoko. I stayed in a house specially for the CID and my dad was also one of them.
“I’m not a CID in football where I arrest culprits, but due to the job of my dad and where I stayed. The name was there before I came but it became popular with Asante Kotoko,” he told Dan Kweku Yeboah TV.
During his tenure with Asante Kotoko, Appiah became known for his defensive solidity and his ability to read the game effectively. The nickname “CID” became synonymous with his strong performances on the field, reflecting his tenacious and vigilant approach to defending.
Ofosu Appiah joined Asante Kotoko from Hearts of Lions in 2003 and left the club to join Kessben FC, now Medeama SC in 2007, having featured in over 90 games while he played in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup. He later rejoined Kotoko from 2008 and left in 2011.
Appiah now works as a coach for Dacosta FC, a second-division club in Kumasi, having acquired his CAF License D certificate.
