Asante Kotoko have announced the signing of Nigerian forward Wisdom Fernando Bassey on a three-year deal, bringing an end to his free transfer period.
The 22-year-old winger joins the Porcupine Warriors on a free transfer after his loan spell at Sporting Lagos came to an end after the 2023-24 season, and also, his contract with Akwa United expired.
Fernando’s registration was finalized on the last day of the transfer window on Sunday, August 25, 2024, and he will join the team in Cape Coast for pre-season training ahead of the upcoming campaign. He has been brought in to replace Bernard Somuah, who has been farmed out on loan to Spanish side Celta Fortuna.
The former Akwa United player has an impressive track record in the Nigerian Professional Football League, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 76 appearances across seven seasons. He also won the Nigeria Premier Football League title in the 2020-21 season with Akwa, with his impressive performances playing a crucial role in the triumph.
Fernando becomes the fifth foreign player to sign for the Ghanaian giants this transfer window, following in the footsteps of Sudanese duo Esmat Abdulhamid and AbdoelRahman Yoouef Yagoub, Congolese defender Samba O’Neil, and Guinean goalkeeper Mohamed Camara.
