The chairman of Danish club FC Nordsjaelland, Tom Vernon, has revealed that Ghana coach Otto Addo turned down an offer to become the team’s head coach before the 2022 World Cup.
Vernon disclosed that Addo, who was then a talent coach at Borussia Dortmund, opted to focus on his role with the Bundesliga team instead.
Vernon, who tracks coaches of Ghanaian heritage and monitors their careers, believes Addo would have been a great fit for the FC Nordsjaelland job due to his experience navigating diverse cultural environments and understanding both European and Ghanaian mindsets.
“I offered him the head coach job at FCN and he said no. I tracked all of those coaches of Ghanaian heritage and monitor their careers, as well as all the local coaches,” Vernon shared with Joy Sports.
The two had previously worked together when Addo was an assistant coach at Nordsjaelland from 2016 to 2017.
Addo, a former Ghana international who played at the 2006 World Cup, has since taken up the reins as the substantive coach of the Black Stars after initially leading the team to the 2022 World Cup.
Despite criticism for not accepting the job permanently earlier, Addo has started his tenure impressively, guiding Ghana to two comeback victories in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, which has put them joint top of Group I.
