Peterborough United have placed a staggering £30 million price tag on Ghanaian forward Kwame Poku, with chairman Darragh MacAnthony insisting the club will still receive “millions and millions” for the out-of-contract star this summer.
Poku, whose contract with Posh expires at the end of the current season, is widely expected to move on, with Championship-bound Birmingham City leading the chase for his signature. According to Football League World, the Blues are preparing to offer the 23-year-old a lucrative £30,000-per-week deal to lure him to St. Andrew’s.
Despite his contract status, Peterborough will be entitled to compensation due to Poku being under the age of 24. If a fee cannot be agreed between clubs, it will be determined by a tribunal—one that MacAnthony believes will yield a sizeable sum for the League One side.
“There are many things a tribunal takes into account when setting a transfer fee,” MacAnthony said on his Hard Truthpodcast. “The offers we have already had are part of that—as are his appearances, his goals, the contract offer we made him, and what we paid out in transfer fees ourselves. So we will still get millions and millions for him.”
The Posh chairman revealed the club initially paid £250,000 to sign Poku from Colchester United in 2021, with an additional £500,000 in performance-related add-ons since then. Peterborough also made a club-record offer to extend Poku’s contract earlier this season, but MacAnthony has conceded that the player is ready for the next step.
“We did make him a club record offer, but he knows it’s time for him to go to the next level,” MacAnthony added. “Kwame probably won’t go to the Premier League straight away, but he will get a high-end Championship club. He will be a Premier League star in the future—and that next move will probably cost £30 million.”
Despite suffering from injuries this season, Poku has still managed to make a significant impact, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. His performances earned him back-to-back League One Player of the Month awards in September and October, a spot in the League One Team of the Season, and Peterborough’s Players’ Player of the Year award.
Born in Croydon but capped once by Ghana, Poku is poised to become one of the most valuable outgoing transfers in Peterborough United’s history. His next move could be a major step toward the Premier League—and a massive financial windfall for his current club.
