The 23-year-old centre-back rose above the Trinidadian defence to head in a precise cross from Jordan Ayew during the first half at Brentford Community Stadium, giving Ghana the opening goal of the match.
Simpson’s performance was particularly meaningful following his struggles in the semi-final defeat to Nigeria, where he slipped during the lead-up to the opposition’s first goal and later scored an unfortunate own goal.
