Italian Serie A club Como have stepped up their pursuit of Ghana international Jerome Opoku, becoming the first team to make an approach for the highly-rated defender following his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 27-year-old centre-back has been one of the standout performers for the Black Stars in the tournament, producing a series of composed and commanding displays that have caught the attention of clubs across Europe.

According to reports, Como have already held preliminary talks with Opoku’s representatives as they seek to reinforce their defence ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. However, the Italian club face stiff competition, with clubs from Spain and England also monitoring the Ghanaian closely.

A La Liga side and a newly-promoted Premier League club are both understood to be keeping tabs on the Istanbul Basaksehir defender, with interest expected to intensify once the World Cup concludes.

Como are reportedly considering Opoku as an alternative target should they fail to land Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah or lose promising centre-back Jacobo Ramon, who has attracted significant transfer interest this summer.

Opoku has played a key role in Ghana’s impressive World Cup campaign, helping the Black Stars establish one of the tournament’s most disciplined defensive units. Although he missed Ghana’s final Group L match against Croatia after picking up a minor knock, the defender is expected to return for the Round of 32 clash against Colombia.

Currently under contract with Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir until 2027, Opoku’s stock continues to rise, with several European clubs now expected to join the race for his signature in the coming weeks.
