Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif will appear before Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports as part of a detailed investigation into Ghana’s performance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
Ussif is set to address questions concerning the Ministry’s role in the Black Stars’ preparations, including budget and expenditure matters related to the tournament. Specifically, he will be asked to clarify the spending of over $3 million within 11 days during the event.
The parliamentary probe, led by Committee Chair Kobina Woyome, will start on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The investigation will also involve testimonies from the Ghana Football Association, the Black Stars management committee, the Ghana League Clubs Association, the National Sports Authority, and both past and present members of the Black Stars.
Additionally, members of the Save Ghana Football Forum, a pressure group that protested following Ghana’s disappointing AFCON 2023 campaign, will also provide evidence to the committee.
Woyome emphasized the purpose of the probe: “The aim is to gain a fundamental understanding of the issues leading to our current situation and to examine individual decisions and conduct that may have impacted the Black Stars negatively,” he told JoySports.
Ghana’s national team exited the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire without securing a victory, finishing third in their group.
