‘There’s nothing to worry about’ — GFA speaks on Black Stars squad delay

Head of Public Relations and Strategy for the Ghana Football Association, Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, has called for patience from Ghanaians regarding the delayed announcement of the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His comments come amid growing anticipation across the country as supporters eagerly await the final squad for the tournament in North America.

Speaking to 3Sports, Mortagbe assured fans that head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical team are carefully preparing a squad capable of representing Ghana with pride on the world stage.

“Well, there’s a deadline that FIFA have given for the countries to release it. Until that deadline passes, I don’t think that there’s anything to be worried about,” he said.

“Carlos Queiroz is working, and they are preparing to release a squad that we believe will go out there and defend the honour of mother Ghana.”

Mortagbe also explained that the Black Stars’ international friendly against Mexico will play an important role in helping the technical team evaluate tactical options and assess additional players before naming the final squad.

“It’s a preparatory game. I believe that there’s a purpose for why the squad that was called up for that game was called up,” he stated.

“From a football fan’s perspective, they might have expected to see more familiar faces, but from the technical team’s point of view, they also want to assess other options who can increase competitiveness within the final squad.”

He added that the coaching staff are expected to be in a stronger position to announce the long-awaited squad after the Mexico encounter.

The Black Stars are using the friendly to fine-tune preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the tournament.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 18 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
