Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has thrown his support behind André Ayew’s inclusion in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the veteran forward still has an important role to play for the Black Stars.
Ayew, 36, is currently without a club following his departure from Dutch side NAC Breda after their relegation from the Eredivisie. The former Ghana captain has not featured for the national team since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where the Black Stars suffered another disappointing group-stage exit.
Despite his absence from recent squads, calls for Ayew’s return have continued to grow, with many pointing to his experience, leadership qualities and impressive international pedigree ahead of Ghana’s fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Ampofo Ankrah argued that Ayew’s wealth of experience could prove invaluable at football’s biggest tournament.
“I will be extremely surprised if Dede Ayew does not secure selection at least into the provisional squad list for the World Cup.
“Beyond his recent solid strides to regain fitness, Dede’s immense experience would be a huge asset for Ghana at the biggest football gathering of all time.”
The NSA boss joins a growing list of football stakeholders and supporters who believe Ayew still has plenty to offer the national team, particularly in a tournament environment where experience and leadership can be decisive factors.
Ayew remains one of Ghana’s most decorated internationals and is among the country’s most experienced World Cup players. The forward has represented the Black Stars at the 2010, 2014 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, making 17 appearances and scoring once on the global stage.
His record and influence within the national team setup have made him one of Ghana’s most respected football figures, with many viewing him as an ideal mentor for the younger players expected to feature at the tournament.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to announce his final squad on June 1, with competition for places intensifying as Ghana prepares for the tournament in North America.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 18 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Whether Ayew earns a place in the final squad remains uncertain, but Ampofo Ankrah believes leaving out one of Ghana’s most experienced players would come as a major surprise.
