Kevin-Prince Boateng has shared a light-hearted but revealing memory of his early days with the Black Stars, describing the relaxed atmosphere in camp before Ghana’s World Cup campaign began.
The former Ghana international admitted he was initially surprised by the carefree mood in the dressing room when he first joined the national team setup.
“When I joined camp, I looked around and thought… ah, this team is not serious at all,” Boateng recalled.
He described a lively environment where players were constantly joking around and enjoying themselves away from the intensity of tournament preparation.
“Everybody was laughing, playing football tennis and enjoying themselves. Then there was Asamoah Gyan dancing everywhere. I asked him, ‘Boss, are you a dancer or a footballer?’” he said with a laugh.
However, Boateng explained that the mood completely shifted once the World Cup matches began, with focus and discipline taking over from the earlier light-hearted atmosphere.
“But the moment the World Cup games started, everything changed completely,” he said.
“Once we stepped onto the pitch, everyone switched mentality. The jokes stopped, the focus came in and everybody was ready to fight for Ghana.”
The former midfielder said that transformation gave him a deeper appreciation of the team’s mentality and unity on the biggest stage in football.
“That’s when I understood the spirit of the Black Stars,” Boateng added.
