Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has revealed his ambition to model his game on African greats Yaya Toure and Michael Essien, combining both their attacking prowess and defensive strength.
Partey, 31, has been in outstanding form for Arsenal in recent weeks. Following a commanding display in the Gunners’ 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash, he continued his fine run with a goal in the 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Emirates Stadium.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Partey explained his desire to become a more complete midfielder.
“I like to be defensive and offensive. I know whenever I am in the opposite area, I have chances for a goal, and I think defensively, I want to be stronger,” he said.
“I want to attack like Yaya Toure and defend like Michael Essien, so to have both qualities is good.”
Arsenal will be hoping to have Partey fit for the crucial return leg against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, after he was forced off with a knock during the first-leg encounter.
